New York Film Critics Circle at the Paris

Monthly screening series - programs announced through December!

DETAILS

The Paris Theater is thrilled to announce the return of our screening series in partnership with the New York Film Critics Circle. Each month, a member of the NYFCC will appear in person at the Paris to introduce a film close to their heart, with filmmaker drop-ins and lively discussions always possible. This marks the continuation of an ongoing series that, in addition to members of the NYFCC, has welcomed special guests like Ethan Hawke, Griffin Dunne, Amy Heckerling, John Patrick Shanley and Andrew Bergman.

Kicking off the series in September is Agnès Varda’s One Sings, the Other Doesn’t, introduced by Dana Stevens, film critic at Slate, and followed by a discussion with award-winning film critic, art critic and film historian Carrie Rickey, who has just released the biography A Complicated Passion: The Life and Work of Agnès Varda.

In October, NYFCC General Manager Stephen Garrett will introduce A Man Escaped, Robert Bresson's taut and suspenseful masterwork about a French Resistance leader's daring prison break told with methodical precision.

Soraya Nadia McDonald, senior culture critic at Andscape, will introduce November’s selection: Spike Lee’s School Daze, the master filmmaker’s 1988 look at HBCU life that boasts an all-star cast including Laurence Fishburne, Giancarlo Esposito, Tisha Campbell, and Ossie Davis. School Daze production designer Wynn Thomas will join McDonald for a post-screening discussion of the film.

In December, Esther Zuckerman will present screwball classic The Philadelphia Story on 35MM, in celebration of her forthcoming book Falling in Love at the Movies: Rom-Coms from the Screwball Era to Today.

These events mark just the beginning of what’s sure to be a memorable and enduring community gathering.
