Post-screening Q&A with The Only Girl in the Orchestra subject Orin O'Brien and director Molly O'Brien, moderated by Rolling Stone's David Fear.
The Paris presents a special screening of Academy Award®-nominated documentary short film The Only Girl in the Orchestra, about trailblazing double bassist Orin O’Brien who was the first female musician in the New York Philharmonic - hired in 1966 by Leonard Bernstein. The short will screen ahead of F.W. Murnau’s Sunrise: A Song of Two Humans, which stars Orin's father George O’Brien.
THE ONLY GIRL IN THE ORCHESTRA (2024)
Trailblazing double bassist Orin O’Brien never wanted the spotlight, but when Leonard Bernstein hired her in 1966 as the first female musician in the New York Philharmonic, it was inevitable that she would become the focus of much interest and fascination.
Now 87 years old and recently retired, Orin looks back on her remarkable life and career, insisting that a fuss should not be made, much preferring to play a supporting role to the family, students, friends, and colleagues that surround her.
In the delightful short documentary, The Only Girl in the Orchestra, filmmaker Molly O’Brien beautifully captures her aunt Orin’s prodigious contributions as a musician as well as her unique philosophy that the key to enjoying life is to “play second fiddle."
SUNRISE: A SONG OF TWO HUMANS (1926)
A sophisticated city woman seduces a farmer and convinces him to murder his wife and join her in the city, but he ends up rekindling his romance with his wife when he changes his mind at the last moment.
This program will not include an intermission. THE ONLY GIRL IN THE ORCHESTRA (35 min., DCP) will screen first at 3 PM, followed by SUNRISE: A SONG OF TWO HUMANS (94 min., DCP) at approx. 3:35 PM.
